IV Drip Rate and Infusion Rate Practice

IV rate questions often feel stressful because the wording changes. The structure stays the same: volume, time, and sometimes drop factor.

NurseDose Trainer helps nursing students practise IV calculation questions such as mL/hour and drops/min. These are study questions for exam preparation, not clinical instructions.

The key is to first decide what the question is asking for. Is it asking for an infusion pump rate in mL/hour, or a manual drip rate in drops/min?

mL/hour questions

  • Find the total volume.
  • Find the total time in hours.
  • Divide volume by time.
  • Round only according to the rules given by your program or exam.

Drops/min questions

  • Find volume in mL.
  • Find drop factor in drops/mL.
  • Find time in minutes.
  • Use: volume × drop factor ÷ time.

Practice examples

Infusion rate Infuse 1,000 mL over 10 hours. What is the pump rate? 1,000 mL ÷ 10 hours = 100 mL/hour.

Answer: 100 mL/hour.

Drip rate Infuse 500 mL over 4 hours. Drop factor: 15 drops/mL. What is drops/min? 4 hours = 240 minutes. 500 × 15 ÷ 240 = 31.25.

Answer: 31 drops/min if rounded to the nearest whole drop.

Short infusion Infuse 250 mL over 30 minutes. What is the mL/hour rate? 30 minutes = 0.5 hours. 250 ÷ 0.5 = 500 mL/hour.

Answer: 500 mL/hour.
