About
One studio, and that is a choice
Studio 1979 is the studio of Niels Klaasen in Arnhem. Sound, sites and software, on commission and under my own name.
Why so many different disciplines
The short answer: because in practice they kept turning out to belong together. Groot Onderhoud is the clearest example. It started with mastering their debut album, carried on through the singles after that, and ended up at the site the music sits on plus the maintenance around it. One band, three disciplines, one point of contact.
Every time one of those follow-up questions came, the answer was either to hand it off or to learn it. It became the second. That is not a strategy invented afterwards, but it is why six disciplines now sit under one roof.
What that gives you
No coordination between parties who do not know each other's work. No project stalling because it sits with someone else. And no discussion about who is responsible when something is wrong, because that is me.
The downside comes with it: one studio means one calendar. When a large production is running there is less room. You hear that up front, not halfway through.
Why there are own products
Alongside the commissioned work there are nine products under my own name, in the stores and on the web. Practice apps for safety exams and healthcare training, a study app for wine knowledge, subtitling software for the Mac, and an archive of pubs in Arnhem.
They exist partly because I needed them myself, and partly because an own product is the most honest test there is. On a commission you can still talk your way around a delivery. With your own app in the store and real users, it simply has to work, keep working, and still work two years from now.
